Aviara CancerTYPE ID® - FAQ

The following are frequently asked questions about CancerTYPE ID.  

What is CancerTYPE ID®?

CancerTYPE ID is a molecular cancer classification test system based on a panel of 92-genes. The expression of these genes is analyzed by RT-PCR assays. CancerTYPE ID® is capable of classifying 39 tumor types.

How is the CancerTYPE ID test performed?

CancerTYPE ID is performed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) biopsy material obtained from the patient, including small core biopsy samples of tumor tissue.

When should CancerTYPE ID be used?

CancerTYPE ID™ can be used in the initial biopsy work-up to guide the pathologist in the selection of targeted immunohistochemistry testing, as well as identifying and confirming the primary cancer site. Once the primary cancer site is confirmed, this information enables the clinician to select the most appropriate treatment regimens for the patient.

How accurate are the results of CancerTYPE ID?

The test has been shown to have a success rate of 87% in classifying 39 tumor types.

How can the CancerTYPE ID test be ordered?

It can only be ordered by a physician or other healthcare professionals.  AviaraDx is a CLIA certified laboratory as well as the developer of the test.  We perform the test and send the results back to the ordering physician and/or other healthcare professionals.

How long does it take to get the results of the CancerTYPE ID test?

Test results are usually available 7-10 days after the tissue specimen is received by AviaraDx.  The results can only be released to the ordering physician and/or other healthcare professionals.

How are the results reported?

The CancerTYPE ID test result will provide the clinician with the top 5 primary cancer site predictions based on the gene expression of the tumor sample or biopsy. Physicians can also discuss results with AviaraDx’s medical director. 

Does CancerTYPE ID replace other standard laboratory or imaging tests for metastatic cancer?

No, CancerTYPE ID should be incorporated with other laboratory and imaging tests in the complete evaluation of metastatic cancers.

Is CancerTYPE ID covered by health insurance?

AviaraDx is working directly with providers and payers to provide reimbursement as quickly as possible.  Because this test is new, many insurance companies will first evaluate the test and then determine how to set their reimbursement policy.  AviaraDx works with patients and third party payers regarding coverage and reimbursement of the test.
